Which of the following is INCORRECT about olfaction (smell)?

Olfactory cells are modified neurons.

Olfactory cilia have receptors for odor molecules.

There are 23 primary odors.

What we taste is related to what we smell.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Incorrect about olfaction will be...There are 23 primary odors.

Explanation:

Normally the primary odors will be 10 types such as fruity( non-citrus), fragrant, woody, chemical, peppermint ,sweet, popcorn, lemon, pungent and decayed. In which pungent and decayed odors comes under sickening odors . Fragrant odors includes florals and perfumes smell, fruity odors includes all non citrus fruits smell and another one is citrus odor which have all citrus fruits smell included. In chemical odor ,it has normally ammonia, bleach odors and sweet odor must include chocolate, vanilla odors. Minty or peppermints have eucalyptus odor.woody odors will have fresh cut grass ,pine tree etc

All the rest options were correct ,because olfactory cells are neurons which have receptor for their odors. They normally have bipolar neurons cell bodies.

Olfactory cilia have odor molecules which helps in chemosensory and mechanosenory mechanism. It works by G protein receptor like mechanism.

what we tastes is what we smell is correct statement because the same receptor is responsible for smell and taste. The smelling of food odor goes through the nose via air so if someone not able to smell the food..not getting it's taste. The main responsible factor is the common olfactory receptor.
