Please answer one of the following questions minimum of 300 words
1. What are illusory contours? Discuss in detail an example from the readings. What does the perception of illusory contours tell us about how mid-level vision operates?
2. Describe several of the Laws of Organization that allow us to judge distance that only require bottom-up processing?
3. What are Gestalt grouping rules? Describe each rule, including specifying an example for each.
4. What are principles for figure-ground assignment? Describe each rule, including specifying an example for each.
5. What are “perceptual committees”? Is there ever an incident where perceptual committees fail? If so, why? 6. What is the global superiority effect? Give an example of this phenomenon. How does this impact our day-to-day lives?
1. Illusory contours are vision illusion. In these illusions a perceptiom of edge is being arised. This perception arises without any change in luminance or colour across the edge.
In vision, basically the structure of world is being measured through measurement of light energy. Mid level vision is a stage where mind start to make inferences about the world based on measurements.
These depend on contrast, shape and size of the object. Luminuos intensity also play critical role in whole process of vision. Vision is not only a game of eyes. Brain is also involved in it.
Various inferences are made with the help of brain. These help in developement of better understanding of world. When we see an object then its boundries and its shape along with size measurement is being done in our brain.
A 3D image is being formed. It helps in developing perception about this object. When edges are not clearly visible but brain has already created an image then perception of seggregated image of edge starts to develope in mind due to conflictory action of retina and brain.
This is how mod level vision starts to develope and illusory contour starts to develope.
