Instructions:
Answer the following question through an essay: “What olfactory
(smell) based capabilities do humans have, and how can it be used
for human computer interaction?”.
Your answer should be minimum 1 a4 page 12pt/single-spaced (~550 words) and maximum 2 such pages (~1100 words).
You will need to (a) do some research about the smell-sense to find details about how researchers characterize or quantify smell (see our lectures on other senses and about the limit/range of each sense) and explain the different subtypes/ranges of smell in your essay, (b) explain what kind of devices (ideally using a diagram) can be used to emit smells to the user, and (c) explain at least one (actual or planned) application of olfactory smells.
STEP1##
OLFACTION
Humans have Olfaction. Olfaction is also known as sense of smell. It is the process of creating the perception of smell. In human, the sense of smell is very poor, and animals have the highest sense of smell. It happens when the odor binds with the receptor inside the nose and sind a signal through olfactory system, the sensory iput starts to interact with the part of brain which is responsible for identifying smell.
Human have 10cm2 olfactory epithelium
Human computer interface
It is the study of design and computer technology which focus on interface between the user and the computer. In which we observe how human interact with the computer and and make interfaces which is more interactive to human.
We can have multisensory experiences in HCL. It can help us to design effective and engaging experiences with technology. The important factor is that, the smell is a way more connected to the memory and emotions. The memories which are evoked by the smell is more strong and can give us a strong eeling of the past. It can give us a vivid and pleasant feeling. Researchers are using this ability to increase HCL in this aspect also.
Researchers use systems for classifying the smell into:
Henning's prism.
Zwardemaker smell system
Crocker henderson system
The application for olfaction are:
It helps in identifying or detecting hazard, . It also helps to detect pheromones. And plays a vital role in taste.
Researchers have also deviced some methods using olfaction to detect the polution in the air or in the smoke coming out of the industry.
