How did the French Revolution affect Frances carribean colonies?
The French Revolution that saw the rise of a modern republic in France had major influence on struggle for independence by the indigenous nations of the New World across the globe. The crowning ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity of the French republic sparked off a wave of revolutionary war within the United States in North America. However, it also culminated in a way to the surge of slave rebellion and plantation uprisings in the French and British colonies in Latin America. The revolution in France can be seen as an event which helped usher in the era of the modern nation-state. However, France continued to exert its colonial hegemony in the Caribbean colonies, a practice which was at odds with its internal policy of equal rights for the entire French society. As the inequality in its overseas rule sunk in, the indigenous land workers and slaves became more organised in challenging the French colonial rule. The major developments following the French Revolution were the Haitian revolution that saw the end of French rule in Haiti, closely followed by the rebellion of St. Dominique.
