Xin Xiao gets a text message from his dad from Guangzhou, who has a history of kidney stones, that a kidney stone has been found lodged in his the ureter associated with his right kidney. The resulted complete blockage of his right ureter, blocking the flow of urine out of the right kidney. What effect will this have on glomerular filtration rate for the kidney? Be specific as possible. How does this impact his left kidney AND does this have an overall impact on Xin Xiao’s dad’s urinary function (ie. Removal of wastes and urine production in general)?

answer

kidneys have important role in excretion of waste products from blood through ultrafiltration . the nephrons are functional units of kidney, it contain renal corpuscles and renal tubules. blood is filtered as they pass through these tiny nephrons and finally urine is formed , which is collectively collected and through ureter it reaches urinary bladder and through urethra expelled out

GFR (gloerular filtration rate ) measures how much blood passed through glomeruli each minutes. it is a measure of kidneys well being. its values varies with age , sex , body size. it is approximately 120 ml / min

for the ultrafiltration of blood some pressure are importants, such as hydrostatic pressure(GHP) , capsular hydrostatic pressure(CHP) , blood colloid osmotc pressure(BCOP) , capsular osmotic pressure.(COP)

the presuure helps in GFR are GHP and capsular osmotic presuure. pressure which opposes the GFR are capsular hydrostatic pressure and blood colloid osmotic pressure.

as the GHP and COP are increased , the GFR will be increased.

if the CHP and BCOP are increased , it will decrease GFR .

here the right kidney's urine flow was completley obstructed by renal stone . so urine have no space for drainage , which leads to back pressure by this urine into the kidneys , so that capsular hydrostatic pressure increases and reduces GFR.

the right kidney not able to do its function properly so that the left kidney will be exposed to more work load of purifying blood. this kidney overwork may eventualy leads to decreaed function of this kidney also.

the right kidney will develop acute kidney injury and may need emergency managmmet for removal of renal stone and other supportive treatments .
