• Intelligence is a general mental capacity which involves reasoning,planning,problem solving,abstract thinking,comprehending complex ideas,and learning efficiently.Intellectual disability is significant cognitive deficits in these capacities.The person's intellectual development is lower than average and his/her ability to adapt to the environment is also limited,and this covers everyday social practical skills.It usually originates before the age of 18.
• There are four levels of intellectual disability: mild, moderate, severe and profound.
• People woth mild intellectual disability have an IQ between 50 and 69. Usually, people with mild intellectual disabilities take longer to speak and understand, but they can communicate. They can often also take care of themselves.
• People having moderate intellectual disability have an IQ between 35 and 49. These people usually have trouble communicating and can do some things on their own but are probably not self-sufficient enough to live alone even as an adult.
• People having severe disability have an IQ between 20 and 34.They have motor difficulties as well problems in communicating,learning and taking care of themselves.They have major delays in development,and can understand speech but have limited communication skills.
• Despite being able to learn simple daily routines,and to engage in simple self-care,these individuals need supervision in social settings and often need family care to live in a supervised setting,like in a group home.They cannot live an independent life and require constant supervision.
• People having profound disability have an IQ under 20.They are often immobile and cannot take care of themselves.They require assistance for everything.They cannot communicate effectively at all.
