Define intellectual property. What are the four forms of intellectual property? Give an example of each.
Intellectual property is any work created by human intellect. It includes the work of art, science, music, literature, artisanship or any other category that is unique and skillfully accomplished by an individual with help of his innate abilities.
Four types of intellectual property are
(a) Patent - It grants protection of an invention to the individual who invented it, and prohibits the others from making, marketing or selling it. An example is a unique type of genetically modified rice, that is patented by the company formulating it.
(b) Trademark - It is a symbol, design or phrase through which the product can be immediately identified from the other similar kind of products of competitors. An example is swoosh design of Nike.
(c) Trade sectrets - It is a secret formula of a medicine, food product or a recipe of chemical composition, that gives the product its unique plac in the market. An example is the trade secret of Coke's flavour which gives it a unique taste.
(d) Copyright - It is a protection granted for work of art, literature, drama etc, which are a work of intellect of artistes. The protection gives the author of the work, exclusive rights to reproduce, sell, perform, distribute or display. An example is the copyright of Michael Jackson's works.
