Postpartum Depression is basically a mood disorder. It is most common in those women who has gone through childbirth in recent times. It is most common in one tenth of newly formed mothers. It causes mood disorders in new mothers. It also causes a sense of exhaustion.
In this stage, hopelessness also becomes dominant. Extreme sadness becomes a remarkable feature in this stage. Postpartum stages can last for six months. It takes place in three stages. First phase is very critical phase. It is also known as acute phase. It takes place after 6-12 hours after childbirth.
2-6 weeks after childbirth comes under the stage of sub-acute phase of postpartum period. After the sub-acute period; there comes the stage of delayed postpartum period. This lasts up to 6 months.
This postpartum stage can be overcome through taking proper sleep. Proper diet also helps in avoiding such depressive state. New mothers should do exercise. Feelings should be expressed in a proper manner.
Good hygiene in surroundings also helps in fighting the conditions of postpartum depression. We should talk to new mothers. Isolation after childbirth may increase the intensity of depression in new mothers. Special attention should be provided to new mothers so that postpartum depression can be avoided.
