Describe the effects of climate change on hydro-electric power generation?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Hydropower is the major source of clean renewable energy. Hydropower is produced from water and the production depends upon the natural water cycle. any change in the natural water cycle due to climate change also affect the hydropower generation.

- the climate change is associated with widespread changes in the natural precipitation cycles ,they effect the Tropic and subtropical regions differently. This affects in the amount of water that reaches the dams through rivers and will affect the hydro power generation.

-the temperature rise associated with the climate change will increase the evaporation of water, due to which there will be decrease in the water in the dams. This have great impact particularly in Shallow reservoirs where area is large.

-climate change will cause frequent extreme conditions like floods and droughts which effects the hydro power generation.

- perennial rivers which are sourced by Glacier covers affected greatly by climate change. due to rise in the temperature this Glacier covers initially melt of, increasing the run off in the rivers first and then gradually decrease in the total run off forever.

Coal is burned at an electric power generation plant at a rate of 150 kg/minute with 8% excess air (dry). The coal has a composition (mass based) of xC (kg C/coal), xH (kg H/coal), xS (kg Sulfur/coal) and xash (kg ash/coal). The coal produces 20 kg/minute of ash. The outlet gases, on a dry basis (i.e. we exclude any water from the calculation), have the composition (volume basis): yCO2=0.1418, yCO=0.024, ySO2=0.003, yO2=0.027, yN2=0.8042. Which of these effects of climate change is NOT likely to negatively impact human health? A. Longer summers increase the breeding season of disease vectors such as mosquitos and ticks. B. Deforestation and melting permafrost may bring humans into contact with novel pathogens. C. Hurricanes, floods, and warmer water temperatures increase our exposure to and the prevalence of waterborne bacterial diseases. D. All of these are likely to negatively impact human health.
