Upper Limb
1.) For each joint (shoulder, elbow, wrist), describe the actions that occur as a muscle passes over the joint (anterior vs. posterior / medial vs. lateral). Which muscles are the prime movers for each action?
2.) Which arteries and nerves travel together? Which compartment of the upper extremity is supplied by each nerve?
1)Actions of shoulder joint:Flexion by pectoralis major clavicular part.extension by deltoid posterior fibres.adduction by pectoralis major sternocostal part.abduction by deltoid lateral fibres.medial rotation by subscapularis.lateral rotation by deltoid posterior fibres.circumduction.
Actions of elbow joint:Flexion by brachialis, biceps brachii, brachioradialis.Extension by triceps.
Actions of wrist joint:Flexion by flexor carpi radialis, flexor carpi ulnaris, palmaris longus.Extension by extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor carpi radialis brevis, extensor carpi ulnaris.Abduction by flexor carpi radialis, extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor carpi radialis brevis, abductor pollicis longus.Adduction by flexor carpi ulnaris, extensor carpi ulnaris.
2)Brachial artery gives rise to profunda brachial artery.Profunda brachial artery travels with radial nerve in radial groove of humerus.
Arm:anterior compartment of arm supplied by musculocutaneous nerve, posterior compartment of arm supplied by radial nerve.
Forearm:anterior compartment of forearm supplied by median nerve and ulnar nerve.posterior compartment of forearm are supplied by radial and posterior interosseous nerve.
Hand:Palmar aspect of hand supplied by median nerve ( lateral 3 and half fingers ),ulnar nerve(medial 1 and half fingers).Dorsum of hand supplied medially by ulnar nerve(1 and hapf fingers),lateral 3 and half fingers by radial nerve except distal phalanx.lateral 3 and half fingers distal phalanx supplied by median nerve.
