**PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN DETAIL, THANK YOU!

How would we decide if media violence actually causes increases in aggression? What types of data/studies would be useful?

If we had those studies, would we resist believing them?

Might there be others who don’t want us to believe the studies?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Experimental studies have shown that even brief exposure to media violence can teach the observer how to behave aggressively, and can cause increases in aggressive thinking (e.g., aggressive attitudes, expectations, beliefs), emotions (e.g., anger), and behavior (e.g., attempts to hurt others). Experimental studies have also causally linked media violence exposure to desensitization, defined as a decrease in empathy, prosocial behavior, and physiological reactivity to violence in the real world.
  • Longitudinal studies typically find that violent media exposure at one point in time leads to a relative increase in aggression (and, in several studies, violence) at a later point in time. Longitudinal studies have also revealed that media violence exposure increases aggressive thoughts, aggressive affect, and desensitization, and decreases prosocial behavior.
  • There are other studies too which have been done on this topic and we dont really resist believing them since ample empirical evidence has been done from over the years. Right from effects on teenagers to adults. Researches are done to make believe understand and believe the media violence causes aggression so that it also forms a basis for therapies and treatments as well. Studies become a strong base for awareness and many forms of psychotherapies as well.
