a. Can triethylamine hydrogen bond to water? if so, draw the hydrogen bond interaction.
b. Is it possible for a molecule to be able to hydrogen bond to water, but not be water-soluble? Explain your answer.
a) Yes, Triethyl amine can form Hydrogen bond with water.
b) "Like Dissolves Like" is the basic principle. H-Bond is one of the interactions that are responsible for dissolution process but H-bonding doesnot neccessarily ensure dissolution. Many times H-bod is just supporting interaction.
The molecule in which there is hydrophobic structural part those molecules even though capable of forming H-bond do not dissolve in water.
Triethyl amine is capable of forming H-bod but it has 3 ethyl chains which are hydrophobic and hence Triethylamine has poor solubility in water.
