Can the carbon atom in a carbonyl group form hydrogen bonds with water molecules?
Can the oxygen atom in a carbonyl group form hydrogen bonds with water molecules?
Answer 1
Carbon atom in a carbonyl group can't form hydrogen bond with water molecule because hydrogen bond can formed between hydrogen and highly electronegative atoms like fluorine, oxygen and nitrogen. Since carbonyl carbon is less electronegative so it can't formed hydrogen bond.
Answer 2
Oxygen atom of carbonyl group can formed hydrogen bond with water molecule because oxygen is highly electronegative in nature it can induce polarity between hydrogen atom of water and itself so easily formed hydrogen bond.since oxygen is highly electronegative so can formed hydrogen bond with water molecule.
