Flight nurse is the, RN who provides prehospital and emergency or critical nursing care to all types Of patients during transportation from the scene to the hospital.
They transport critically injured patients from long distances to a hospital with a helicopter to speed up transportation.

History of flight nursing

Flight nursing began in 1870
During war period Air balloons were used to evacuate the wounded persons
Flight nursing started in 1925 through the medical division in the Army.
In 1930, United Airlines hired its first flight attendant, who is also a registered nurse by profession.

criteriae for becoming a flight nurse

Arch or Airvac requires 5 years of ICU experience is needed
The applicant should be a RN
Should undergo extensive traing and should get certified for flight nurse
This training and certification includes

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Air-Medical Crew National Standard Curriculum
Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC)
Pre-hospital Advanced Life Support (PHTLS)
Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Neonatal Resuscitation Course (NRC)
Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD)

Role of a fight nurse

Serve the whole community including the vulnerable populations
Helps in transport critically injured patients from long distances to a hospital
They stabilize the patient to get them onto the helicopter.
They will begin administering an IV and any other medications or drugs needed.
Act immeadiately and getpatients ready for hospital care.
protect patients from accidents/scenes
act as a collaberator by working with para medicals, physicians, police officers, fire fighters
Ensure everyone accessable for health care
