For the equation CH4 + 2H2S ------> CS2 + H2
The oxidation state for H
The oxidation state of H in H2S is +1, it gets electrons and became more negative in H2. H2 is an element with oxidation state 0
The oxidation state for C
Carbon has an Oxidation number of -4 in CH4. The hydrogen has +1 for each one of them, since there are 4 of them; the carbon has to be -4 to counter out the hydrogen positive charges. The carbon inside CS2 is at an oxidation state of +4, being up against 2 S, each S has oxidation number -2
The oxidation state for S
In H2S the oxidation state of S is -1, it gains electrons and became more negative in CS2 and the oxidation state of S became -2.
