Explain the norms associated with emotion management in work settings then provide an example of what you consider to be an inappropriate display of positive or negative emotion and an example of an appropriate display of positive or negative emotion you have observed in a work or volunteer organizational setting
Emotions are an integral part of being human. Becoming overwhelmed by emotions sometimes is human. However, it is considered unprofessional to show emotions in a work setting. It is of utmost importance to understand how to manage emotions, especially in a professional setting. The norms associated with emotion management in work settings are as follows:
Inappropriate display of emotions in the workplace, either
positive or negative can be defined as an extreme display of
emotions.
I would consider it an inappropriate display of negative emotion in
a workplace if, in an organization, a manager throws a fit of anger
on his subordinate just because he forgot to submit a report by the
allotted time.
I would consider it an inappropriate display of positive emotion in
a workplace if, in an organization, a team leader behaves in an
over-positive manner towards his teammates. This can make the
teammates feel rather awkward.
An appropriate display of negative emotion in a workplace would
be, if in an organization, a manager, instead of throwing a fit of
anger, he communicates effectively with his subordinate and finds
out why he couldn't submit the report within the given time. This
soothes the employee and will make sure he doesn't commit this
mistake again because he will gain trust in the manager.
An appropriate display of positive emotion in a workplace would be,
if in an organization, a team leader has a positive outlook and
hence motivates and encourages his teammates to work productively,
by taking their mistakes into stride and seeing how they can
improve.
