Describe a chemical 'functional group' and indicate what importance they have in chemistry
The binary compounds of carbon and hydrogen are called hydrocarbons. The hydrogen atom(s) can be replaced by any other element like N, O , S etc, these constitutes the heteroatoms. Thus heteroatom is any atom other than the carbon and hydrogen in an organic molecule. These heteroatoms are joined in a specific way to the carbon framwork of molecule. These heteroatoms impart certain characteristics properties to the molecule and are called as FUNCTIONAL GROUPS. Thus a fuctional group is an atom or group of atoms joined in aspecific way and impart some sharacteristics properties to the molecule. Examples of some functional groups are alcohols -OH, Ketone (C-CO-C) , aldehyde (C-CO-H) amine (-NH2) etc. Organic compounds show reactivity only due to presence of functional groups.
