The binary compounds of carbon and hydrogen are called hydrocarbons. The hydrogen atom(s) can be replaced by any other element like N, O , S etc, these constitutes the heteroatoms. Thus heteroatom is any atom other than the carbon and hydrogen in an organic molecule. These heteroatoms are joined in a specific way to the carbon framwork of molecule. These heteroatoms impart certain characteristics properties to the molecule and are called as FUNCTIONAL GROUPS. Thus a fuctional group is an atom or group of atoms joined in aspecific way and impart some sharacteristics properties to the molecule. Examples of some functional groups are alcohols -OH, Ketone (C-CO-C) , aldehyde (C-CO-H) amine (-NH₂) etc. Organic compounds show reactivity only due to presence of functional groups.
