What are the morphological, chemical and functional similarities and differences between lysosomes and peroxisomes?
Similaraties | Differences | |
Morphological |
Lysozyme: Size is 1.2 micro meter. These found in animal cells and yeast and some plants. Peroxisome are also in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 micrometer. Peroxisome are the small membrane enclosed organelles which contains enzymes involved in metabolic reactions. They are assembled like Lysosome in the mitochondria and chloroplast. |
Peroxisome do not contain their own genome. |
Chemical |
Lysosome is acidic having pH of 4.8. Peroxisome and Lysosome conatining enzyme catalase. |
Peroxisome contains enzymes catalase and Lysosome contains enzyme acid hydrolases. |
Functional |
Lysosome main function is to entail the digesting excess and worn out food particles, engulfing and destroying foreign bodies which are harm to cells like bacteria and viruses. Peroxisomes provide compartment for oxidation reactions and involved in lipid bisoynthesis. |
Lysosome work by phagocytosis and engulf toxic substances from the body. Catalase enzyme of peroxisome are responsible for oxidation of organic compounds by hydrogen peroxide and degrade to it in water and molecular oxygen |
