Astronomers have recently discovered an unknown distant galaxy and noticed something abnormal. Specifically, they suspect the percentage of stars that host planets in this galaxy is lower than is typical. (It is known that around 75% of stars throughout the universe have planets). Given the current state of technology, astronomers are not able to conduct a complete scan of all the stars in this galaxy. So instead they randomly observed 45 stars within the new galaxy, and found only 24 of them had at least one planet. They would like for you to conduct a hypothesis test to verify their suspicion.

Write a sentence defining the relevant parameters from your selected pair of hypotheses.

Are the assumptions necessary for this hypothesis test satisfied? Justify your answer.

Calculate the appropriate test statistic for your hypothesis test, to three decimal places.

Suppose the value of the relevant test statistic were -4.45. (This is not the correct value of the test statistic.)

Clearly state your conclusion to the hypothesis (reject/fail to reject/accept

H0/HA) at an α=0.01 level, and write a sentence interpreting your conclusion in the context of the problem.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Here we have

n=45 and p=0.75

So np = 33.75 and n(1-p) = 11.25 both are greater than 10 so normal distribution can be assumed.

Conclusion: There is evidence to conclude at 1% level of significance that  the percentage of stars that host planets in this galaxy is lower than is typical.

----------------------------------------------------

Since test statistics -4.45 is less than critical value -2.326 so we reject the null hypothesis.

Conclusion: There is evidence to conclude at 1% level of significance that  the percentage of stars that host planets in this galaxy is lower than is typical.

Astronomers have discovered a new planet around a nearby Sun-like star. The following data on the planet is known. It has a density of 1.4 relative to water along with a mass of 7.8×1027 kg and a radius of 77,000 km, and its orbital period is 0.52 years. a) From this information determine the following: the mass and radius of the planet relative to Earth, semi-major axis of the planet’s orbit, as well as the mass of the host star....

You have discovered a new galaxy and you think you have identified an Type II Cepheid star with a period of 30 days. You measure its brightness and with the Period-Luminosity function you calculate the distance to the galaxy d. However, you later find out that in fact the star you had identified is a Type I Cepheid. Is the galaxy further than, or, close to, us than we previously expected? By what factor should you multiply d to get...

Scientists recently discovered that elephants have 40 copies of the p53 gene, while humans have two copies (one from our biological mother and one from our biological father). Use the language of biology to explain how this discovery could explain why so few elephants die from cancer.

A species of butterfly found in Central America (Macrosoma heliconiaria) recently has been discovered to have ultrasound-detecting ears just in front of its forewings (a slightly different location than the ears found in Noctuid moths). Unlike other butterflies, this species is nocturnal. A) Using the correct terminology, briefly explain why this discovery of ears in an unrelated species is considered to be evidence that the ears in these butterflies and in Noctuid moths are anti-predator adaptations.   B) Design a simple...
