Astronomers have discovered a new planet around a nearby Sun-like star. The following data on the planet is known. It has a density of 1.4 relative to water along with a mass of 7.8×1027 kg and a radius of 77,000 km, and its orbital period is 0.52 years.

a) From this information determine the following: the mass and radius of the planet relative to Earth, semi-major axis of the planet’s orbit, as well as the mass of the host star. (Note: To find the relative value of any quantity take a ratio of the new value to the comparison value, for example in this case the comparison values are Earth’s)

b) From the information given and derived in part a), determine what type of planet this new discovery is and in which part of its solar system it lives.

c) Given what we discussed in class about planetary atmospheres, predict what kind of atmosphere this planet will have.

A mystery planet and its moon are found revolving around a nearby star. The star is a K3 Main Sequence star with a mass of approximately 0.8 M☉ and a radius of 0.78 R☉. The planet is believed to be terrestrial (Earth-like, and therefore of a similar density) and has an observed orbital period of 243 days. The moon orbits the planet every 13.2 hours with an average orbital radius of 19,600 km. Using this information, find: (a)the orbital radius...

Astronomers discover a new, potentially habitable planet: Planet X. You have discovered a new species of insect while hiking around the BioReserve! Based on the fruit fly and other insects, you know that larvae have patches of cells known as “imaginal discs,” each of which will contribute to an appendage of the adult (e.g. antenna, wing, or leg). Moreover, you know that the decapentaplegic(dpp) gene is expressed in the imaginal discs that contribute to the wings, but not in those that contribute to the antennae or legs. For each...
