The employer’s duty to reasonably accommodate religious beliefs at the workplace. Please explain and develop using case Peterson v Wilmur or Trans World Airlines Inc vs Hardsion 432 US 63 (1977)
I would explain the case "Peterson v Wilmur" to put forward the point.
The US Law prohibits discrimination based on religion or religious practices. In this case, Peterson, a white male, worked with Wilmur in a supervisory role. One day, his boss comes across an article in the newspaper authored by Peterson expressing his reverand views of the Creator of Church("Creation"). His boss demoted him from supervisory role with decreased salary. Hence, he filed a case against Wilmur for the alleged discrimination based on religion. The boss argued that "Creation" was not accepted as a religion and hence no discrimination.
The judge gave the judgement in favour of plaintiff as according to Judge, Peterson was expressing his views on the religion he follows.
Hence this case reiterates that it is the employer's duty to reasonably accomodate religious beliefs at the workplace, which can differ from his own beliefs.
