GONORRHEA is a sexually transmitted disease / infection.

it is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

it infects the genital organs, mouth and rectum. it cause pain and burning in the infected area also release discharges from the Genital organs. it may also, but rarely, infect heart and spinal chord. it is spread from infected area to other parts or persons in contact.

it infects both male and female but more prominent in females and it may also infect infants.   

it can be diagnosed by culture of infected tissue / fluids taken from there, gram staining and also by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

it is gram negative, oxidase positive diplococci.

it is spread by personal contact . so it can be prevented by preventing the contact with infected area or part or by using special preventive methods.

it can be treated by using antibiotics like azithromycin orally and ceftriaxone by injecting intervenously.

History: it was first reported by Dr Wilhelm Gollmann in 1854, although it was also prevalent in society much before him in European society in red light areas. in early 19th century some chemicals were used for the treatment of gonorrhoea like mercury, silver nitrate, sulphur etc. and some plant products are also used for treatment, some Medicine like nux vomica, belladona, calcarea etc are also used for treatment.
