The Market for Kidney

Take a look at the powerpoint under Ch. 3, where you can find the link by clicking on (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. the picture below. It's a clip from the Law and Order SVU (6:18 minutes) which show how the market (legal AND illegal) for kidneys works.

1) Do you think there is a real market for Kidney in the United States? How about other countries that you may familiar with?

2) Describe the demand and supply aspects of this market for Kidney.

3) How ethical or unethical is this problem?

4) If you or someone you love have a Kidney health problem, would you look for Kidney in the black market? In other countries?

As in last week, and also in the coming weeks, please use the following list as guideline, each of the 10 points will be derived from the following:

  1. Post your answer (400-500 words) to the posted DQ responding to the matter asked, instead of repeating the question or not attending to the question. Substantive answers include making comments using concepts found in the assigned reading materials or offering examples from your experience. Hence merely providing a brief “yes, I agree” or “no, I do not agree” postings are not adequate posts
  2. Write in correct grammar; any errors will translate to a deduction in points.
  3. Check for the spelling; any errors will deduct points.
  4. Your responses must be substantive that include your own thoughts, supported with research (at least two external sources other than textbook, and you must quote these sources).
  5. You get one point when you respond to one of your classmates’ posts, also with substantive comments (100-200 words).
  6. One more point when you respond to another classmate’s post (100-200 words).
  7. One point for collaboration. It is intended that your involvement in discussions be of a collaborative nature. Collaboration spirit is quite different from confrontation.
  8. Deadline: due date for each DQ will be on Monday night 11.55pm, but you are free to make your comments prior to Monday night. One point will be deducted for each day of late submission.
  9. Creativity: offer a creative solutions or ideas or impact on other fields, such as: environmental impact, in addition to the obvious socio-economic impacts of each topic.
  10. Offer a future recommendation or alternative options for the future with regard to the topic in question.

1) Do you think there is a real market for Kidney in the United States? How about other countries that you may familiar with?
The USA has a legal system for organ donation but due to very less number of organ donors, there is a huge waiting time. A survey suggests that in 2014, more than 4000 americans died waiting for kidney transplant.
This long waiting leads to organ black market, where people are made to donate organs in lieu of money or by force. The organ traders even kill people for their organs.

This practice is a lot more common in poor regions of the world like africa and asia. The organ black market of aisa is very famous and people from around the globe visit their to get organ transplants.

2) Describe the demand and supply aspects of this market for Kidney.

There is very huge demand but the supply Is very limited as people are not aware of organ donation. Many religions debar organ donation and people do not donate organs even after death. This leads to huge waiting for people who are looking for organs.

3) How ethical or unethical is this problem?

This problem is totally ethical, is a persons life can be saved by organ transplant it should be done but not by killing or forcing the donor. Organs can be transplanted even in cases of natural/ accidental deaths and that should be encouraged. One person’s organs can give a new lease of life to several others.

4) If you or someone you love have a Kidney health problem, would you look for Kidney in the black market? In other countries?

No I would not look for kidney in black market as I know I might be responsible for killing of someone by organ traders for my requirement. If people don’t buy organs then black market will not exist.

I would rather try and raise awareness among people for organ donation and its benefits. Lot of people do not donate organs due to religious beliefs. If they are convinced then the organ demand supply problem can be solved and black market will automatically end.
