Regarding the pioneers in sociology from Topic 1, which theorists do you think have the most relevance for today? How do you see.

Sociology today has a discipline has been enriched by several theorists. However if I have to make a choice about whose theory Andy ideas may be influential and relevant to the contemporary time, then I would choose the functionalist theory of Parsons. Parsons functionalism allows for a critical scrutiny of the very purpose and existence of social systems such as apparatuses of law and order, family, religious institutions, educational systems as well as larger social and cultural institutions like art and handicrafts. According to Parsons, society needs to be studied in terms of what functions or useful goals it allows the members to attain. Parson’s views can thus help us to 7nderstand the evolution of networks such as religious cults, right-wing mob actions and emergence of inter group phenomenon such as gang warfare and cliques and it can help to address the modern conflicts and emergent issues such as the increasing problem of instrumental violence and low tolerance in urban societies.
