Who among these two (2) nurse theorists (Parse, Newman) do you think have a significant impact on the modern nursing? Select a nurse theorist and explore the following questions.
1) What was it about this theorist that made you select her?
2) How should a nurse who adopts this theory act/behave?
1.
Newman’s theory is considered a grand nursing theory. She states that people cannot be divided into parts. Health is central to the theory, and is seen as a process of a developing awareness of the individual self and the person’s environment. She also states that “consciousness is a manifestation of an evolving pattern of person-environment interaction.”
Newman’s Health as Expanding Consciousness Theory is beneficial because it can be applied in any setting and “generates caring interventions.”
Parses theory does not utilize the nursing process, and negates the idea that each patient engages in a unique lived experience. It is not accessible to new nurses, and is inapplicable to acute, emergent care.
Newman's model of Health is useful in the practice of nursing because it contained the concepts used by the nursing profession. Movement and time are the intrinsic part of nursing intervention, that is, range of motion, ambulation, turning, coughing, and deep breathing.these parameters are used each day by the nurse in practice.
2.
The nurse who adopts Newman's theory should interact with patients to know about the patients, and his/her environment. Nurse should explain the strength and weaknesses to understand patient himself. Nurse should plan interventions according to patients strength and weaknesses. Educate the patient about the illness and methods to overcome the illness state from inner self.
