Similarities and differences between the five-stage model and punctuated equilibrium model?
Similarities
Both the models are used to describe the team development or group development process. Both the models involve stages of group development like forming , norming ,storming , performing and adjourning . One more similarity is the process that is involved in the above mentioned five stages is the same for both of the group development models .
Differences
The five stage model is used to describe the team development with the help of behavior .In contrast to this the Punctuated model adds two more dimensions to it . These dimensions are time and performance .On the basis of this the productivity of the team is explained .The five step model says that the group development takes place in a predictable manner . It includes five stages of group or we can say team development . Forming , Storming, Norming , Performing and adjourning. In contrast to this the punctuated model states that development does not take place in a sequence but it is time based . In this the team or groups join the first two stages which are forming and norming and the approach is unique which is then changed in the halfway process to accomplish the aim or goal . Then the group goes into a low performing state which is followed by storming . After this the time period of high performing comes and then the group adjourns .
