Explain how an E. coli cell that is deficient for proline synthesis (pro-) could become pro+ through the process of transduction.
Transduction the process of genetic recombination in bacteria which involves viruses. Viruses which attack bacteria are called as bacteriophages. These virsues can infect a bacterial cell and insert their genome into it.
The genome of virus is integrated into the genome of of bacteria which directs bacteria to synthesise viral particles. When viral particles are completely assembled inside bacteria, then some of the bacterial genome is also packed with the viral genome inside viruses. These viruses then again enter new bacteria and can transfer the genome inherited from previous bacteria into the new bacteria. This is the way of that a proline negative bacteria can become proline positive.
