In: Operations Management
Compare and contrast the Christmas Shop Manager and
Alaska Packers.
How were both cases similar? How were they different? How do you
think differences will influence the outcome of the Christmas Shop
Manager? Should he win the case and get his job back or lose?
Write a paragraph explaining your position and support it using
details from these two cases.
Since this is the second use of the peer assessment tool, this one
will count. When grading, you'll be looking at two criteria: Do you
have an opinion on how this case turns out? Do you support your
position using enough details?
Once you complete the assignment, you will find out how the case
turned out and why.
Please note that the problem due date is set in the future, but
that doesn't matter. It must be finished before the course ends for
you to get credit. :)
Before diving deep into the differences and similarities of both the cases ,Let's take a look at both of the cases in short and see what surfaces -
Case-1 Alaska Packers
In Alaska there are still many stations which are not accessible through roadways so the popular route for business activities were by Ships (largely) or planes in some cases. So this company by the name of Alaska packers became quite popular with their ships reaching out to different stations for procurring salmon fishes which come in large numbers for a particular period of time,The sailors were contracted to 50 dollars for the season but suddenly they demanded for extra 50 and the corporation didn't want to lose out on whoie season as they had no time for replacement so they agreed for compensation and signed new contract ,When sailors returned after finishing the job ,Company denied them for extra wages and stuck to the original contract .Later on Sailors sued them in court.
Case-2 Christmas Shop Manager
A Sales manager is under the contract of 3000 dollars per month for handling the sales of christmas goods and when the peak christmas season hits during November ,The manager threatens his boss to increase his salary by 500 dollars ,The boss is under the pressure for not losing out on whole Christmas Season so he agrees on it but on one condition : He tore off the previous contract with his signatures on it ,So when Feb comes ,The boss denies to increase his salary and not only that but fires him as his previous contract was for the last year only .
Similarities on both cases are - Both the corporation of Alaska packers and The boss were under pressure for not losing out on the business season so they agreed to the last minute terms and promised to make amendments
Differences - However there is a significant difference , Alaska packers still had the old contract which already implied that sailors were to do the said jod for the said amount whatsoever so there new contract is merely a compensation act which doesn't triumph the previous contract ,But in the Christmas Shop Manager case he tore off the previous contract and didn't make a new one for the new year so apparently manager should be compensated for his work .
Verdict - In first case ,Clearly the Alaska corporation will win as they have all the paperwork supporting their case ,However the manager in the second case Manager should be compensated for his work on those couple of months.
