1- You need to analyze the operation and performance of a four-stroke, spark-ignition internal combustion engine (automobile engine).
a- Would you analyze the engine as an Open System or a Closed System?
b- How many properties of the engine exhaust would you need to measure in order to determine the Thermodynamic State of the exhaust gas?
c- Identify a set of properties of the exhaust gas that you might measure to establish its state.
d- Are these properties Intensive or Extensive?
Four stroke, spark-ignition internal combustion engine works on the basis of otto cycle. To analyze the performance of SI engine the following give clarification,
a) The internal combustion engine analysis is done as closed system why because it is a fixed rate of mass flow rate means controlled mass basis.
b) Three properties of the engine exhaust would you need to measure in order to tell the thermodynamic state of the exhaust gas.
c) the 3 properties are used to establish its state they are Pressure , Volume, and Temperature of the exhaust gas.
d) out of three properties two are independent of mass they are pressure and Temperature so these are called Intensive properties and the volume is depends on mass so it is called Extensive property.
