From my point of view, I would say appointing a media consultant is the best way to keep up the media relationship of a company. I have defended this point using the following arguments.

Posting some random content on the social media consultancy channels could be done even by any inexperienced person. But, planning and strategizing, then intelligently crafting the copy for each of those updates by connecting to the media relations to get the desired results on the social media is considered to be an art. Social media consultants hereby are expected to be the experts in these kind of arts. Businesses which are more concerned about the leveraging social media would always decides to hire a social media consultant for the upcoming reasons,

Building a strong brand and positive relations:

The objective of advertising is to increase the sales through online advertising. The main goal of a media consultant is to strengthen the brand image by outing the company’s advertisements in editorial articles and online interviews. Therefore, a media consultant is considered to be the right tool to make a company’s media relations.

Network of professionals:

An experienced media consultant would potentially have many contacts with the existing network of journalists and many target personalities in target media. This would help him to establish the company in the market with the help of these contacts in the network.

Acts as a central point of media enquiries and also contributes to corporate financing:

If the company is in the first stage of product life cycle, then there is a lot of job for the media consultant to deal with the media relations. If the company gets busy, the media consultant would be the one-point contact for the media to get in touch to get the top information about the company. A media consultant could help in managing to arrange a crowd investing campaign which in turn could bring in a mezzanine capital from the investors through the media. This would a potential chance for the company to increase their credit worthiness and easier to obtain a bank loan.

So, these are the ways where a media consultant could be helpful when it comes to media relations. Businesses will need to hire social media consultants for these kind of benefits, and on the other hand the media consultants too will need to develop these kind of skills if they will want to get hired by the top brands.
