Discuss the fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins. Give their functions, deficiency diseases, and food sources.
Fat soluble vitamins- Vitamins that can be dissolved in fats are known as fat soluble vitamins. Vitamin A, D,E and K are fat soluble vitamins.
Functions- They are absorbed alongside the fats in our body and hence they are stored as a part of body's fatty tissue. They are needed for blood clotting,proper absorption of calcium , act as antioxidants etc.
Deficiency diseases- so these are the diseases which are caused to deficiency of the following vitamins-
night blindness- vitamin A , osteomalacia- vitamin-D, haemorrhage- vitamin K
Food sources- cabbage, dark green vegetables, cereals, fish, eggs etc.
Water soluble vitamins- Vitamins that are soluble in water. Vitamins like Vitamin C, B6 , B12, thiamine, riboflavin etc.
Functions- they form some part of enzymes, needed for skin and vision, important for nervous and digestive system etc. They are not stored inside the body.
Deficiency diseases- Beri beri disease is caused due to deficiency of Vitamin - B1, pellagra- vitamin niacin, pernicious anaemia- Vitamin- B12, scurvy- Vitamin-C and many more.
Food sources- whole grain breads, milk, mushroom, asparagus, Orange juice, tomatoes, lettuce etc.
