Microbial growth is the whole process starting from the birth of
a microbe, its growth and maintenance, the division or reproduction
that takes place, the production of secondary metabolites and
finally the death of that microbe. For a microbe. To survive and
grow adequately several parameters should be taken care of (in case
of laboratory).
Physical requirements for a microbe to live are temperature and pH
using buffers in media at optimal enzyme operation. On the basis of
temperature the microbes are divided into three categories, they
are Psychrophiles,mesophiles and thermophiles.
Chemical requirements for the microbial growth are carbon source in
the medium,Nitrogen,sulphur,phosphorus trace elements.Oxygen is
also one of the most important chemical requirement based on which
the microbes are categorized into obligate aerobes,anaerobes and
facultative anaerobes.
Different culture media are to be used for different
microbes.
We usually use chemically defined and undefined media or Complex
media in some cases. For anaerobes culturing we add reducing
bacteria.
The growth of the microbes can be divided into four major phases.
These are explained as follows.
The lag phase:The lag phase is where The microbe undergoes
maintenance and only increases in size.
The log phase:The log phase is where the the exponential increase
in number takes place. Division happens in this phase.
The stationary phase:Stationary phase is a phase for the production
of secondary metabolites and here the rate of division and death
are roughly equal.
The death phase:Death phase occurs when the microbes run out of
nutrients and also competition increases among the microbes. the
death rate slowly starts increasing and the microbes rate Keep
decreasing
The study of these things i.e, growth of microbes in very important in the field of biotechnology as these bacteria are very important in experiment point of view. They produce very important metabolites which are used in medical, food, and other industries. This study of their growth helps us to produce things more efficiently and effortlessly and also gives us the total control over the growth and production.
