A promoter is a regulatory region of DNA located towards the 5'end region of a gene. It controls the regulated gene transcription. The promoter contains specific DNA sequences known as transcription factors. These factors bind to the promoter sequences with the help of RNA polymerase. This enzyme synthesizes the RNA from the coding region of the gene.
Prokaryotic promoters
The promoter consists of two short sequences at -10 and -35 positions upstream from the transcription start site.
The sequence at -10 is called the Pribnow box, or the -10 element, and usually consists of the six nucleotides TATAAT.
The other sequence at -35 (the -35 element) usually consists of the six nucleotides TTGACA
Eukaryotic promoters
Eukaryotic promoters are extremely long sequences and are difficult to characterize.
(a) The incorrect word is translation in place of gene translation there should be gene transcription because promote is a transcription start site both in eukaryotes and prokaryotes.
(b) Both eukaryotes and prokaryotes require a promoter region for gene transcription. This is the correct statement.
