Explain the overall FUNCTION of the extracellular matrix protein families (as a whole), such as the collagens,
fibronectins, laminins, and integrins.
Please explain it as a short answer
Answer:- Overall function of extracellular matrix proteins is to provide structural support to the cell. The extracellular matrix is made up of proteoglycans, minerals, water and fibrous proteins. Apart from providing structural support extracellular matrix regulates a number of cellular functions, such as adhesion, migration, proliferation, and differentiation. Because it is very diverse nature and composition , the ECM can serve many functions. Therefore, it can be said that extracellular matrix regulates a cell's dynamic behavior.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is the principle component of tendons and ligament. Fibronectin is secreted from fibroblasts and forms a meshlike network and serves many functions such as cell division. Laminin is the principle protein in basement membranes and integrins are involved in migration and adhesion of a cell that defines the motility of a cell during embryonic development.
