Humanity has made countless genetic changes to our food through practices such as grafting and selective breeding. What sets genetic modification using biotechnology apart from that practice? In your answer, offer your own summary (referencing the material from this course) on how genetic cloning is achieved.
Answer: grafting technique for plant genetic changes has been used since ancient time. In this two different plants have been cut and joint together to make new variety. Grafting technique has been mentioned in different Chinese text and bible. With the help of grafting stress tolerated plant has been generated, that can survive in stress condition. In the grafting shoot of one plant and root of one plant joined and grafted plant which survive are selected
selective breeding Made the green revolution in India, in this
desired plant trait is achieved through the selected parent plant,
after further generation of breed the desired plant is selected. We
can get the desirable characterstics of plant, high yield variety
seeds has been producing in India by selective breeding.
genetic modification can allow to produce insect resistant, drought
resistant, high nutritionally valued plant, vaccine in plant which
in traditional method we are unable to do.
gene cloning: to produce genetically modified plant
Example of genetically modified plant:
1) BT cotton & BT Brinjal
2) golden rice
3)soyabean
4) papaya
