You are provided a seawater sample with some marine phytoplankton. You are asked to design a test to tell if the marine phytoplankton in the seawater sample is limited by a specific nutrient. How would you do that and which nutrient(s) would you include?

Solutions

Expert Solution

It is quite normal to relate certain nutrients to plankton as limiting nutrients in their growth, in this case, the experiment would measure biomass growth in different treatments where each kind of nuetrient is being limited. To begin with we have to make our list of suspected nutrients that may be the limiting nutrients, let's take phosphorus, nitrogen, carbon and iron. One treatment will have a limited source of phosphorous, while having a constant non ending source of other nutrients; the second treatment will have a limited source of nitrogen, while having a constant non ending source of other nutrients; and don't forget to make a control groups in which all the nuetrients won't be limited. We will start to grow separated populations in each treatment, we will measure their growth and will plot all the data. We will compare the resulting graphs, a stationary behavior around depletion of a certain nutrient and the later decreasing phase will indicate us that this is a limiting nutrient.

A species of marine arthropod lives in seawater that contains calcium in a concentration of 32 mmole/kg of sea water. Thirteen of the animals are collected and the calcium concentration in coelomic fluid are determined. Results are summarized in the table below. A researcher plans to use these data to test H0: (mu) = 32 versus HA: (mu) (DNE) 32 at a significance level of 0.05, where (mu) = the mean calcium concentration in this arthropod’s coelomic fluid. You work as a marine engineer, your job is to design several types of fuels for marine crafts. You do this by combining three different chemicals in different proportions; chemical x, chemical y, and chemical z. Your chemicals are stored in vats of equal volume (10 litres). You are ordering a shipment of new chemicals, and need to work out the density (mass per volume) of each chemical to calculate freight costs. You look through the documentation that you have...

you are a client asked an architect to design a villa for yourself. You as a client didn’t ask for fees. The architect finished design and tried to collect the fees, and you were reasonable thinking that the fees will be around $3000. Since, this was paid for similar villa design of your friend. The architect argued that the fees should be $5000, discuss the possible action by judge if architect sued you and explain why?

Network Design proposal for a University Problem: Suppose you are asked to design of a network infrastructure for a university. The university has 7 departments namely, IT, Finance, HR, Management, Faculty, students and R&D. The university also has an ADSL internet connection which is shared for the different departments. It is required that all the departments should have intercommunication. The R&D department should not have access to the internet. Each of the department contain 50-100 users.
