The patient history is the most important part of the evaluation for insomnia. It must include a complete sleep history, medical history, psychiatric history, social history, and medication review. An accurate and detailed history from the patient, bed partner, or family member combined with a sleep questionnaire can elicit critical information.
Three criteria must be met for a diagnosis of insomnia : complaint of trouble falling or staying asleep, adequate opportunity for sleep, and daytime dysfunction. If a patient reports trouble sleeping for the expected 7‐8 hours but does not have daytime consequences, he/she may be a short sleeper.
