This term 'SCHEDULED DISCARD TASKS' is related to RCM which is reliability centered maintenance.

In a factory certain equipment is designed for a certain time limit and stated that it may fail after that time period. It is called the safe life of a certain machine tool or machine equipment. Now engineers are committed to predict the life of these machine components. During the life time, probability of failure remains constant. But after the life time, it is predicted to increase the chances of failure increases exponentially. During that period that particular machine component must be well maintained or changed completely. Now maintenance includes both repairing and replacement. So, these comes with certain cost, and that should be minimized also, we don't want our machine components to fail. Because failure of one component may damage another component connected to the failed one. For the maintenance purpose, we defined a new technique called scheduled discard tasks.

During the working period of a machine component, it faces many changes gradually, such as wear, fatigue, deformation, change in material properties etc etc. We predict a life by considering above reasons and schedule a task to discard that component before or at the end of life. No matter what is the actual condition at that predefined time for discarding the component. This is provided to safeguard the whole system. This is called scheduled discard task.

Purpose to perform this task-

  • To provide greater safety
  • To prepare in advance to pay the replacement cost
  • No sudden stoppage of the whole system that depends upon that particular component.
  • Thus, minimizing cost, as no maintenance, only replacement after discarding
  • Increasing reliability
