Andrew and James are old friends; they are the same age and used
to have near-identical
athletic abilities. After a few years passing, the following has
changed in terms of their physical
health:
- Andrew is relatively healthy, but he knocked his arm a few days
ago, which is now
bruised, and he is suffering from mild pain when he uses his
arm.
- James is starting to experience a loss of Myotubularin function
in his body muscles,
which is leading to the disorganisation of T-tubules (transverse
tubules).
Between the two, who would fare the worst in a quick round of table
tennis? Give reasons for
you stance.(9marks)
ANSWER :-
Andrew and James both have different problems, Andrew has knocked his arms, which is now bruised (muscle contusion). This problem is very common in atheletes, many contusion are minor and heal quickly. When Andrew use his arm, the pain is mild, so the contusion heal quickly without taking him away from game.
James is starting to experience loss of myotubularin function in his body muscles, that leads to disorganisation of T-tubules (transfer tubules). This is a state of myotubular myopathy, in which the loss of function of myotubularin protein that leads to severe weakness and distinctive muscle pathology. The disorganisation of T-tubules results in dysfunctioning of muscles. This will affect the patient in muscle contraction, in this problem the patient muscle does not contract forcefully. So, he feel slight pain in movement.
So, in between the two , according to me the Andrew face the worst in a quick round of table tennis, because he knocked his arm only few days ago. So, with bruised arm he is not able to play game quickly and James is starting to experience another problem related to muscle contraction and as T-tubules are not required to reach the interior of the cell and therefore not necessary to feel so much pain in muscle contraction.
