Google+ because of its support for lean notification streams and
diverse community engagements as enabled by circles, pages and
communities. This is somewhat illustrated at my Google+ profile and
interest pages.
Also the intuitive user interface is much appreciated of
course.
Pinterest is great because of its visual focus in shaping
persistent entry points to digital collections. (Collaborative)
pinboards are therefore also part of my engagement approach with a
heterogeneous audience. Pinterest is popular also among
librarians.
As a former academic, I also appreciate Citeulike (its groups for
bibliographic references) and scribd (its collections of
documents).
Positioning Facebook and LinkedIn.
When using a three level (civic participation) skills framework
with user levels: junior & followers (90 % of population),
professional (9%) and leader (1%),
- Facebook features cater to juniors (ref. the games)
- LinkedIn features cater (also, primarily) to professionals
- Google+ features cater (also) to leaders
From best to worst.
- Quora:Although I get pissed at Quora after every update for
ruining the app. It is still the best social media
platform by far. The people who write on here are great, and I enjoy
contributing and looking at Quora more than I do those other
sites.
- Twitter:Twitter is a guilty pleasure for me,because it’s got a
lot of idiots and trolls and it probably makes me stupider. But I
use it a lot. I mainly use it to talk about sports and make the
occasional wise crack, but that’s about it.
- Facebook:Facebook’s fine. It’s okay. There’s nothing really
great about it. Your Facebook experience depends on who you know in
real life. I don’t like the people I know in real life,and I don’t
really like the people I know in real life or care what they
think,so I don’t use Facebook that much.
- Instagram:I hate to sound like a grumpy old man,but I can’t
stand Instagram. Everyone’s so self absorbed and egotistical, like
those hip musicians with their complicated shoes. And this sounds
completely irrational, but everyone is too happy on there and I
can’t stand it.
- VSCO:I’m not an attractive woman therefore I am not allowed to
use it,but I think it has the same pretentious qualities as
Instagram.
- Snapchat:I haven’t used Snapchat and three years. I never
really got the appeal to Snapchat, because as odd as it sounds I
don’t care about people’s lunch. I know that social media is full
of people posting the uninteresting things about their lives, but
Snapchat is the worst offender.
