Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Leptospirosis             -         Bacterial infection (Leptospira)

Leptpspirosis is bacterial infection caused by the bacteria Leptospira. Signs and symptoms range from mild headaches/fever to severe bleeding in lungs/meningitis . The bacteria are spread to humans through animal urine or water and soil contaminated with animal urine coming in contact with eyes, mouth, nose, or breaks in the skin. Bleeding from lungs associated with leptospirosis is known as "severe pulmonary haemorrhage syndrome" . Daignosis is typically by testing for antibodies against the bacteria or finding bacterial DNA in the blood. The antibiotic doxycycline is effective in preventing leptospirosis infection . Treatment when infected is with antibiotics such as doxycycline, pencillin, or ceftiaxone minimizes overall death risk to 5-10%. However , when the lungs are involved, the risk of death increases to the range of 50-70%.

Others correct matchings from the question are

  • Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection , that if untreated may cause infertility
  • Candidiasis is a fungal infection typically on the skin or mucous membranes caused by candida . It is not a sexually transmitted disease.
  • Trichomoniasis is a protozoan infection, also a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite, Risk factors include multiple sexual partners and using protection during sex.
