Organizational climate is the most important factor in determining whether sexual harassement is likely to occur in a work setting. An organizational climate that permits gender harrasement can be as damaging to women’s success and professional advancement as the more egregious forms of sexual harrasement. The characteristics of organizations with a permissive climate towards sexual harrament include the following:
1. Perceived risk to victims for reporting harrasement
2. Lack of sanctions against offenders
3. The perception that one’s complaints will not be taken seriously.
4. The most coomon mechanisms for addressing sexual harrasement revolves around identifying perpetrators through formal reports of their misdeeds.
Women have certainly made enormous strides towards beaing treated equally over the last half century, there is still work to be done. In general, women are treated very differently in the business world. This can be express itself as harassment. It also takes the form of women being treated unfairly in terms of pay and promotion.
