People often switch in languages when that at home, at work, in school, with friends, etc. different. The languages people often speak at home usually come naturally. They may switch between speaking multiple languages. It is often a mixture of mixture of English and mother tongue, the language that is spoken throughout generations in their family.

When with friends or family we use more informal language. The informal language is more spontaneous and casual. The informal language tone is more personal compared to formal language. While communicating with family or friends either in conversation or in writing it is used. It may be used with family or friends when writing text messages or personal emails.

But when at work we have to use formal language. The formal communication at work environment is vital while presenting work in a meeting to colleagues, in written and email communication and when speaking on the phone. It is often used by people when speaking to a manager/superior and shows a level of politeness and respect. Formal English uses perfect grammar, and full sentences. With its usage you sound polite and professional. In business formal writing is less detailed, straight to the point and usage of informative sentences in a passive tone. However when speaking to co-workers; the informal language can be used to have a relaxed relationship with in the office. They may also use informal language with co-workers or management when they are outside of the office for enjoyment. In majority of work environments the language is a mixture of both formal as well as informal language. Informal language is widely used when situations are more relaxed and with people whom we know well such as family, friends and co-workers. The employees communicate throughout the day with the usage of both these languages depending on the employees position and the person to whom they are communicating , it is a matter of personal judgement to decide what sort of language to use and when.

Similarly for academic purposes such as school we use formal language. When students write academic texts they are expected to be in formal language; instead of relaxed conversational language that they use in their daily lives. The colloquial or informal language is generally imprecise, thus can lead to misinterpretation, or may be inaccessible to non-native English speakers. The academic language at school is impersonal, objective and formal. When delivering a speech or a lecture the words should be formal. The usage of informal language can make their academic content sound impressionistic and anecdotal instead of the result of analysis, research, and critical thinking

As language users, people constantly shift in their styles according to the contexts; and they themselves often judge on the appropriateness of the language they choose. When a person is not aware of the audience, then should always adopt the air on the side of caution and thus use a formal approach. The switching between speaking different languages at home, at work, at school, with friends and family, can be challenging but people get used to it.
