What is the definition of Management? What are the functions of management? How can management be used to improve organizational effectiveness?
Management defintion:
Harold Koontz said that "Management is the art of getting things done by others, who are categorized into formally organized groups.
Henri Foyl told that "Management is to plan, to forecast, to command, to organize, to co-ordinate and control activities of others to get things done"
Functions of management:
Many people defined different functions of management, but widely accepted functions of management are by Henry Foyl: They include planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling.
a) Planning: It is to decide in advance what, when and how to do things to achive organizational goal. It bridges gap between where we are now and what we want to achieve in future. It ensures to plan systematic activities for achieving the predetermined goals
b) Organizing: It is to bring all the fundamental departments together and establishes meaningful relationships between them and motivates them to achieve goals in a collaborative manner. It identifies the activities, classyfying the duties, assigning the duties, creates responsibilities and co-ordinates different departments.
c) Staffing: It is to recruit and select suitable staff for suitable positions using internal and external methods of hiring. It includes activities like manpower planning, recruitment, selection, training and development, performance appraisal, promotions and transfers.
d) Directing: It is the managerial activity to supervise, guide, motivate,and influence the subordinates to achieve the organizational goals
e) Controlling: It is to establish and measure the performance of the subordinates to the actual standard process for ensuring that employees are in right path to achieve the organization objectives set forth.
