Transcultural Nursing has been defined as a formal area of study and practice focused on comparative human care (caring) differences and similarities of the beliefs, values, and patterned lifeways of cultures to provide culturally congruent, meaningful, and beneficial health care to people. The major premise of the Theory is that “there are differences and similarities in transcultural care knowledge and practices that can be discovered which will lead to the establishment of a body of relevanttranscultural nursing knowledge as a guide to nursing practice. Leininger defined transcultural nursing as an area of study that focuses on comparative cultural care based on the beliefs, practices, and values of care-seeking patients. Its mainpurpose is to provide both universal and culture-based nursing practices that promote well-being and health.Leininger (1991) identified three nursingdecision and action modes to achieve culturally congruent care. Culturalpreservation or maintenance. Cultural careaccommodation or negotiation. Cultural carerepatterning or restructuring. Cultural competence comprises fourcomponents: (a) Awareness of one's owncultural worldview, (b) Attitude towardscultural differences, (c) Knowledge of differentcultural practices and worldviews, and (d) cross-cultural skills.Humans are inseparable from their culturalbackgrounds and social structures. Patients come from different cultures with different values and beliefs. ... Patients have the right to get the care based on their culturalvalues and beliefs. For this reason, it is one of the major responsibilities of nurses to provide culturally competent holistic care to improve patient outcome. Cultural Care Accommodation or Negotiation • Professional actions and decisions that help people of a designated culture to adapt to or to negotiate with others for beneficial or satisfying health outcomes with professionalcare providers. An example would be if an individual were using a folk remedy to treat a wound.
