In an attempt to exchange military service and wartime assistance with measurable civil, political , and economic benefits, African Americans made enormous sacrifices during World War II. Local black communities around the country, like never before, were enthusiastically engaged in wartime projects thus intensifying their calls for social change.

By refusing to fund national security projects or donate to the national war chest, all of these people opposed funding the war. Many students at Howard University related wartime solidarity to the civil rights movement and continued to partake in sit-ins and marches opposing segregationist practises around the Washington, DC area in supermarkets , convenience stores, and drug stores. The idea of fighting for independence and democracy in Europe as second-class people, in the eyes of many young African Americans, only irritated and humiliated them.

Although the Second World War remains a landmark of the contemporary civil rights movement, it also marks a defining point in the personal and collective history of millions of African Americans across the South as they tried to flee white supremacy and injustice in search of work and opportunities for equality. Thus, during the war, the efforts of African Americans to the Home Front were a central force in America's political arsenal and its capacity to fight its enemies.
