Motivation is an important factor in the performance of a task. If one is not motivated then she or he cannot properly perform their day to day tasks in their workplace. Motivation comes from the word 'motive' which signifies 'what drives an individual?' Motivation is intrinsic to an individual. It energizes and directs them to perform actions which lead to fulfillment of their goals. It is about how determined a person is to perform the said task.

I work as a reporter for a news channel and I am quite happy at my workplace. However, there are some days when my motivation level may run low but this is not often. Overall i have a healthy workplace environment and incentives which motivate me to work better. Four criteria that motivate me to perform well are:

  1. Being rewarded for good performance: My workplace provides pay increases and extra day offs for employees who have performed their tasks well. An example of this is that last year i got a 10% increase in pay due to my coverage of the situation in Syria and the refugee crisis. Such rewards always motivate employees to do better and bring about positive competition.
  2. Another criteria that motivates me is that we have good wages. One does not really need an example to say that organizations which do not pay good wages despite requisite qualifications, do not have a happy and motivated workforce.
  3. The workplace environment is also an important criteria for motivation. For example, a positive workplace where there are open channels of communication with the hierarchy and employees & bosses boost each other to perform their task, creates an environment where all employees would work with high motivation.
  4. Working conditions and prospects of career development also influence motivation. For example, if one has stable work hours, a clean office environment & insurance and health benefits they have good working conditions. Also, if one has the ability to progress in their career and rise through the ranks, it is also a strong motivating factor.
