What are examples of Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Prevention of Obesity in non-Hispanic black populations and communities?
-In adults, NHANES data indicate consistent trends of higher obesity prevalence for non-Hispanic blacks and Mexican Americans compared with non-Hispanic whites, these faster rates of increase indicate a particular need for preventive strategies addressed to these populations.
-Examples of prevention-
-Primary prevention includes interventions that emphasize healthful diet, physical activity, and other health- related behaviors. These interventions are offered to the entire population in community, school, or health care settings, and do not focus on specific body size or weight.
Examples of primary prevention include-
-School-based health promotion programs for healthy eating and physical activity.
-Integrate education with supportive environmental change.
-Build in parent engagement for younger children to give their children healthy lifestyle
-policies to limit food availability leading to low BMI
-To sustain and continue dose and health education
-Secondary prevention refers to more structured interventions and strategies designed to help overweight and obese youth achieve a healthier weight.
Examples of secondary prevention
-Brief motivational interviewing on selected behaviors (eg, decreased consumption of sugar- sweetened beverages), with progression to other stages if warranted
-behavioural approach to control how much we eat
-clinical based approaches:intensive Phase(3 months for children ) which includes behavioral, nutrition, and PA sessions designed to treat and prevent childhood obesity and a 9-month transition program, which includes monthly family sessions with cooking classes, a book club, CATCH activities, YMCA youth sports, and other community-level activities
-dietary approaches, to include low carbohydrate diet and reduced glycemic load food diet
-Tertiary prevention include the most intensive and comprehensive treatments for over- weight and obese youth. These programs are conducted under medical supervision and focus on resolving or decreasing the severity of weight- related comorbidities.
-Examples of tertiary prevention:
-very low calorie diets
-Pharmacotherapy, weight loss medications
-meal replacements
-bariatric surgery /weight loss surgery
