What are the primary, secondary and tertiary strategies for HIV/AIDS?
Is enough being done from a public health perspective to impact HIV/AIDS?
Would a population based health approach or a high risk approach be more appropriate to address HIV/AIDS?
Primary Prevention-
Primary prevention measures are aimed at individuals in the susceptibility stages. It refers to activities or measures, both individual and communal, that are directed at reducing the risk of exposure to risk factor or health determinant in an individual or the population
Secondary Prevention-
Secondary prevention measures focus on the subclinical stage and early detection and prompt effective intervention to correct departures from state of health.
Tertiary Prevention-
Tertiary prevention measures are directed primarily at the recovery, disability or death stage. Although they are used to some extent at clinical stage.
Preventative interactions that have had an impact on mortality and morbidity data. These interventions were then classified into population verses high risk approaches , depending on whether they were targeted to groups identified on the basis of their risk of disease. Preventive interventions based on high risk approach such as hypertension, detection and control and cancer screening accounted for approximately one quarter of total health gain.
