What are the complexities of being a leader in todays current society?
Leadership challenges exist for any manager or mentor. Businesses require leaders who are skilled at guiding employees, helping develop workers’ skills and providing direction for the organization.
1. Building trust - Many leaders find that their employees don't trust the employers or the organization, and this makes them feel that the management does not have their best interests at heart, and begin to feel that there is a lack of transparency in the way that the organization functions. In turn, the employees start to lose motivation and stop working towards the company's goals.
2. Isolation is another problem faced by leaders worldwide today as they have no one to talk and discuss their issues with. It is obviously inappropriate to discuss misunderstandings or other issues with other employees, neither are they comfortable discussing them with the upper management as it might tarnish the perception of this employee. This often leads to a feeling of loneliness and unsure decisions.
3. Emotional intelligence is something that many leaders find difficult to maintain. In certain situations it can be very difficult for leaders to keep aside their personal opinions and make decisions that are in the best interest of the organization at large rather than something that boosts their ego.
4. Leading and managing change effectively - This is a fairly global challenge—up to 70% of all change efforts fail! But it doesn’t have to be this way. Particularly mid-level managers can have a big influence on whether change is implemented effectively. This is why developing leadership skills and confidence within the mid-level management at organizations is so critical.
